JOHN A. BROADUS

A LIVING LEGACY

Edited by Roger D. Duke and David S. Dockery

Indeed, the legacy of Broadus lives on today, reflecting a model author, teacher, preacher, scholar, seminary leader, and denominational statesman. This timely new biography, a collection of ten independently contributed chapters that address his work from various angles, presents Broadus as a shining example of balance, careful thinking, and biblical faithfulness in a season when Southern Baptists are seeking to re-establish a new consensus and move forward in the twenty-first century.

"John A. Broadus: A Living Legacy should find its way onto the shelves of seminary libraries and into the personal libraries of ministers-especially but not only--Southern Baptists. It is both a worthwhile contribution to our understanding of Southern Baptist history and stimulus for a well informed presentation of the gospel message in a postmodern world."

Paul R. Waibel, Professor of History

Bellhaven College

"This superb collection of studies, rooted as they are in solid scholarship and love for the body of churches that Broadus faithfully served, provides Southern Baptists--and all interested in Baptist life in nineteenth-century America--with the resources for such a reflection. May these studies lead to rejoicing over what God's grace can do in and through the life of a redeemed sinner."

ESSAYS PRESENTED AT THE ANDREW C. FULLERTON CENTER FOR BAPTIST STUDIES

By Roger D. Duke

Here compiled and edited are academic papers presented at The Andrew Fuller Center for Baptist Studies at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary over the past several years. Each represents a break-out session conference presentation that supported the main theme of the Andrew Fuller Conference for that particular year. They are now offered in this wider venue for all who might seek a better knowledge of Baptist, Evangelical, and Puritan history.

PRAISE FOR BAPTISTS, EVANGELICALS, AND PURITANS:

71MP0iAoVpL.png

"As a bonus to thinking about theology proper, you will be treated to a demonstration of how to cause others to think your way. Duke gives one of these papers a rhetorical analysis, revealing the means of persuasion the authors used to convince their hearers to accept their message. I believe you will find this short illustration of the use of the twin disciplines of rhetoric and logic very interesting. You may also find yourself wishing they had been in the curriculum when you were in school...Tolle lege. Take and read!"

REASON FOR THE SEASON

MINISTERIAL REFLECTIONS ON GRIEF & SUFFERING AS SPIRITUAL FORMATIONS

Edited By Roger D. Duke and Bog Agee

A collection of essays from pastors and physicians on how God has used grief and suffering in the lives of those who minister and serve the church to grow them spiritually and prepare them for ministry.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

“The contributors to this fine volume address the problem of pain and suffering not only with powerful insights from their own personal experiences, but also with clarifying pastoral and theological reflection. When people experience hurt and suffering, when they face the confusion associated with many of life’s challenges, they want and need practical as well as scriptural guidance. Such guidance can be found throughout the various chapters in this volume. I am confident that the biblical encouragement found in these pages will be helpful for many.”

Dr. David S. Dockery

President, Union University

“In the early days of my pastoral ministry, I began to learn that there is a hurt in every heart and in every home. While the contributors to this book present many reminders of this tearful reality, they also testify that the grace of God is sufficient to sustain the followers of Jesus in a fallen, broken world.”

THE FOUR CALLINGS OF WILLIAM CAREY

THE FATHER OF MODERN MISSIONS

By Roger D. Duke

This volume contains four aspects of William Carey's life. They were first written as conference papers to be delivered to a Baptist church mission's conference. Later they were turned into manuscript chapters for this volume. His call to salvation experience, his call to be a foreign missionary, his call to go to India as a missionary, and his call to persevere under the harshest circumstances for forty years. It is written to be an encouragement to the corporate churches and to individuals to hear God's call on one's life and to persevere and be faithful to that calling.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

“There have been many books published on William Carey, the great pioneer of modern missions, since his death in 1834.  But his story is as relevant today as ever and I am pleased to welcome this new study by Roger Duke focused on Carey and God's callings in his life."

Dr. Timothy George, Professor of Church History

Founding Dean, Beeson Divinity School

“Roger has put it all together in a succinct and clear presentation. He is driven to tell this story through confidence in the authenticity of the vision that drove Carey and company. The reader will find this book to be a pleasure and a healthy challenge.

JOHN ALBERT BROADUS

PRINCE OF THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST PULPIT

By Roger D. Duke

The following volume revisits Broadus' life and contains numerous sermons by Broadus covering a vast spectrum of theological matter. John Broadus served as one of the founders of Southern Seminary, and he became The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary’s second president (1889-95) upon the death of his good friend and colleague James P. Boyce.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

"Dr. Roger Duke has provided a valuable resource in offering this sermonic literature for preachers who want to advance in their proclamation by returning to one of the greatest sources in homiletics--the sermons of John A."

Robert Smith, Professor of Divinity and Christian Preaching

Beeson Divinity School

"Roger Duke has flamed that fan through selecting and presenting these shining examples of Broadus' preaching.  Through the gift of these sermons, we can almost sit in his classroom; we can nearly hear his voice thunder from the pulpit, calling us to an obedient faith in Christ whom he preached."

Associate Dean, Ministry and Proclamation

VENTURE ALL FOR GOD

PIETY IN THE WRITINGS OF JOHN BUNYAN

Edited By Roger D. Duke and Phil A. Newton

Many Christians are familiar with The Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan's (1628-1688) famous book written from a prison cell, which portrays the Christian life as one traveling from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. During Bunyan's life, however, he produced nearly sixty books and tracts. Roger Duke and Phil Newton, with Drew Harris, trace the significant events that shaped Bunyan's life and thought in a biographical introduction and, in thirty-one excerpts from a variety of this great man of faith's writings, give us a glimpse of his piety, which flowed from his desire to venture all for God.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

“All those who, like Timothy, are prepared to ‘Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart’ (2 Tim. 2:22) will find in this wonderful, spiritually nurturing volume great encouragement and inspiration to “venture all for God” and live a life devoted to the glory of God and to the truth of his gospel.”

Andreas Köstenberger, Professor of New Testament and Biblical Theology

Director of PhD studies, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

“John Bunyan has left the English-speaking world an almost unparalleled literary legacy of evangelical and Reformed piety. Phil Newton, Roger Duke, and Drew Harris have done us a service by making this collection of Bunyan’s writings available. It is a worthy contribution to the outstanding Profiles in Reformed Spirituality series and will be a source of inspiration and comfort for many pastors, seminary students, and Christian scholars. This book deserves a careful and prayerful reading.”

SOLDIERS OF CHRIST

SELECTIONS FROM THE WRITINGS OF BASIL MANLY, SR., & BASIL MANLEY, JR.

FOREWARD BY R. ALBERT MOHLER, JR.

By Michael A.G. Haykin, Roger D. Duke and A. James Fuller

Basil Manly, Sr. and his son Basil Manly, Jr. played vital roles in shaping a number of the central institutions of the Southern Baptist community in its formative years in the nineteenth century, including the influential Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Undergirding their churchmanship was a vigorous Calvinistic Baptist piety that was expressed in sermons and tracts, hymns and confessional statements, letters and diaries, all of which are represented in this timely volume of selections from their writings. Here we have a wonderful window onto the vista of nineteenth-century Southern Baptist life with all of its glorious strengths as well as its clear failings.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

“The publication of these writings is long overdue and is most welcome, and the editors have done their work well. The selections are filled with insight, encouragement, and challenge. May readers catch the Manlys’ zeal for spreading the knowledge of the Savior, and their compassion for lost souls.”

Gregory A. Wills, Professor of Church History
The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“A superb collection of well-edited primary sources by two of the most formative shapers of Southern Baptist life in the nineteenth century. The brilliance, vision, passion, and faults of Basil Manly, father and son, come through with clarity in these historic documents, shedding much needed light on Southern culture and Baptist history.”

Timothy George, Founding dean of Beeson Divinity School of Samford University
Senior Editor, Christianity Today.
