Andrew Fuller Center Lecture Series

Presentations by Dr. Roger D. Duke at the Andrew Fuller Center at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

The Andrew Fuller Center for Baptist Studies, located at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, seeks to promote the study of Baptist history as well as theological reflection on the contemporary significance of that history. The center is named in honor of Andrew Fuller (1754-1815), the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth- century English Baptist pastor and theologian, who played a key role in opposing aberrant thought in his day as well as being instrumental in the founding and early years of the Baptist Missionary Society.

The Andrew Fuller Center holds an annual two-day conference in August that examines various aspects of Baptist history and thought. Here compiled is a curated collection of lectures delivered by Dr. Duke at this annual conference.

John Albert Broadus Lecture Series

Teaching Series by Dr. Roger D. Duke

Originally presented at the Southern Baptist Founders Conference Midwest, Dr. Duke lectures on the relationship between John Albert Broadus and the Doctrine of Election.

John A. Broadus (1827-1895) was a founding faculty member and the second president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He preached to Robert E. Lee’s army during the Civil War and later wrote the enduring classic,

A Treatise on the Preparation and Delivery of Sermons. A. T. Robertson called him "one of the finest fruits of modern Christianity." Charles Spurgeon deemed him the "greatest of living preachers." A. H. Newman described Broadus as "perhaps the greatest man the Baptists have produced."

"How far should Calvinism be carried?" inquired John Broadus. And as he would later confess, "I cannot fathom the mystery connected with God's sovereignty and man's accountability."  Join Dr. Duke, Professor of History of Christian Thought, as he traces and explains how John A. Broadus embraced the doctrine of election.    Part 1 in a 2 part series.

VOLUME 2: HOW THE DOCTRINE OF ELECTION AFFECTED JOHN ALBERT BROADUS'S

                    PASTORAL MINISTRY: AN INQUIRY

Join Dr. Duke as he explores whether the Doctrine of Election had an effect on the pastoral ministry of John A. Broadus.  Through historical examination of Broadus's chaplaincy during the Civil War, Dr. Duke endeavors to determine if connections between the two exist.    Part 2 in a 2 part series.
